Why a defined cleaning standard matters

A written cleaning standard prevents vague expectations from reaching the final site review, when disagreement is hardest to resolve.

“Thoroughly cleaned” gives a supervisor nothing reliable to inspect. A defined cleaning standard names the surface and an observable result, such as loose dust removed from the top face of the marked beam or grease removed from the exposed machine base.

Separate three different outcomes

  • Removable dirt: the material included in the clean.
  • Old staining or wear: visible but not promised as removable.
  • Damage: recorded for maintenance, not hidden in cleaning acceptance.

A small reference area or agreed photograph can settle the finish where words alone are unclear. The detailed page on defining a cleaning standard explains how to record one.

Use the same wording at quotation and handover

The area names, exclusions and finish should survive into the cleaning company’s price and the final check. If the wording changes halfway through, nobody is comparing the same task. A cleaning handover record provides space for genuine exceptions.
